Ok, I'm going to keep this pretty simple. Mostly because I suck at realism. But I figure for people who want to know the proper way to layout a face I'd do a crappy tutorial. So, first things first, get yourself a reference image.

Here's mine. So from there, I open the program of my choice, mine being open canvas.

I open my reference image and make a new image. If you want the image to be closest to the original then just look at the actual image size of the reference image. If not, and since I didn't care about the size, just put in some generic size.

So now that I have my basic stuff it's time to do a super duper lame sketch. The sketch should be...a sketch. Which means don't commit to anything. I tend to sketch in blue, no idea why, but I'll sketch out a simple shape for the face and I included the hair line and the fingers so I'd have a reference point.

With the above simple lines done we move on to blocking out the basic locations of things. A few things to keep in mind. 1. Human eyes usually are one eye with apart. Note I say usually. This is not the case for some people. For example, the singer Brandy has her eyes rather spaced out. 2. Faces are NOT symmetrical. So don't draw what you think you see. Eyes aren't always on a perfect line. It's good to do some measuring with a pen or such. Seeing as I'm working digitally I did not, and it will look bad. But as I said eyes aren't alway on a perfect line, check out Shannon Doherty's eyes. Go on, google images my friend. Her eyes are noticably crooked.
3. The nose wings tend to line up with the eyes for the most part. Noses are also evil to draw so it's probably better to shade them.
4.Shading will make a picture go from "omg you suck" to "oh wow you rock." I haven't mastered it yet so I'll always be stuck at "omg you suck."
5. Eyes are always always ALWAYS (did I mention always) in the center of your head/skull.
6. Eyeballs start out the size they are when you're an adult. Hence the reason children have huge eyes. Also, your eyeball is in your skull (which I guess is kind of stupid of me to say). So it's in your eye socket and all that jazz, you more than likely won't see the whole iris when viewing a person.
7. Ummm...Asian eyes are different. Aside from the shape of them they also have the eyelid omitted. Pay attention to small details such as these.

So here is the basic sketch and it looks like a basic sketch... lol. Just to show you where everything is. You put basic lines to indicate the eyes, eyebrows, nose, lips, and whatever else yo want. Measuring using your pencil or whatever else will help. This technique works for digital and traditional art and is probably easier traditionally.

This is the basic sketch finished. I'm not going to go into shading and all that because honestly I don't know how to do it that well. So just remember these tips and what not when attempting to draw realism. Hope it helps!
