How to DJ Preface All right, so you've got DJ access, and you're scratching your head and going 'WHAT?!?' right?
That's what I'm here for. Throughout this guide you will learn the preliminaries of DJing. Now, don't be afraid, it's really not as difficult as one may think.
First off, you need Winamp, which you can get here.
Secondly, you'll need three plugins to go with Winamp.
Shoutcast DSP Multiple-DSP Stacker Enhancer 017
Lastly, you will need to test your connection. You may easily do this here. And note what the upload is. This is CRUCIAL for a steady stream.
Now that all those are done downloading, we can begin the installation.
Installation
If you have already installed Winamp, please skip this section.
Be sure to un-check the last, cause I doubt you want the cheap trick.
Now that it's all installed it'll ask if you want info sent. Best not to.
Plugins
Now we install Enhancer, Stacker, and DSP
Setup
Now go to the preferences via the menu or use the shortcut Ctrl+P. Go to the DSP section, and select the Stacker DSP. The stacker window will load, click the Add DSP button(the red plus) and add Enhancer
Enhancer will load, change settings to those as seen in the screen cap, or close to. 'Dry Signal' is raw signal, Ambience is echo effects. Feel free to toy with these settings but the given settings are tried and true boost. Also, do not forget to click Boost and set the Max volume to ten, else your audio will be VERY quiet. Next add the Shoutcast DSP into the Stacker, and be sure to click the enabling tickmark or else Shoutcast WILL NOT STREAM.
Shoutcast DSP
'How long is this tutorial?!' you're probably asking, right? Just bear with me a little longer. Just a little more to explain.
So, here's the interface. Simple, elegant, clean. The 'Address' is where the server is. In Artgrounds' case, it is www.artgrounds.com. Port is usually 8000, so keep it at that. In the Yellowpages page, the only required area is 'Description' This is your DJ name / whatever appears on the Radio sidebar. Lastly, the password.
Simply go to the top of ArtGrounds, click on Radio (NOT the radio link on the side) Whenever you load the Radio connection page, the password changes. In other words: DO NOT REFRESH if you have a bad connection.
The target rate is 160Kb/s, however, this is 'best case scenario'. If your upload rate is less than 200kb/s, consider 128 or even 96. 64 starts to get distortion and generally sounds bad. Although this sounds weird, there are two factors. Sketcher takes somewhere between 20 and 90 kb/s, the second is that when you max out your upload, you also take a massive hit to your download speed, so a margin is crucial.
Lastly, but certainly not least is the Push To Talk feature. Firstly, you have to have a microphone for this. Next, change from 'Winamp' to 'Soundcard Input'. Don't worry, we'll still be able to hear your songs. Don't think it's going to be overly complicated. First off, open the mixer and mute the microphone. Feedback is bad for our ears. Music Level, how loud the music normally plays, is usually -1dB. BG Music Level, how quiet it gets when you talk over it, is usually -11dB.Mic Level, how loud the microphone is when talking over, is usually -1dB. Fade time, how long the fade in and out when you talk over, is usually 2000ms (2 seconds). Feel free to play with these, but don't push them too far from the norm. Push to talk you have to HOLD DOWN to speak, like a CB radio. 'Lock' on the other hand you click and release, then click again to turn the sound back to normal. Lastly, a final note. Please, please please don't ever let your VUs (The meters to the upper right) reach full. This is called clipping, and it distorts your music, and you really don't want that. It's better to have your listeners have to turn up than have them leave due to bad quality.
Now then, that wasn't /that/ bad, was it? Stay tuned for the Advanced DJ course!
