Lineart Tutorial for Photoshop

This so didn't take me forever to figure out, I swear XD But anyway, yeah, I'm making a tutorial, cause apparently, Sana loves me X3 It's a lineart tutorial, and for those of you who always say I have good lineart in Sketcher (WTF? XD) just apply this same stuff to Sketcher, got eet?

Alright, enough chit-chat, let's get started! I'm using Photoshop CS2, but any version of Photoshop will work, trust me. I was using Photoshop Elements for the longest time before I got this. I'm also using a tablet, which has this nice little tool called pen pressure, so for those of you who have mouses, this might not work out so well, but if you look at Witchy-Twitchy's lineart tutorial, you'll find that one to be more mouse-friendly 8D

OK, now first off, either scan your sketch and put it into PS or sketch it right on the program. If you scan it you might wanna make the sketch a different color so it's easier to lineart over, and to do that just go to Layer>New Adjustment Layer>Hue/Saturation, and make sure you click the checkbox that says "colorize," and adjust it however you feel

SHIZAM. I sketched mine in Sketcher then brought it here. Now, after this, you're gonna want to lighten the sketch so it makes it easier to lineart over. So, you can either take an eraser and lightly erase over your sketch, or you can adjust the opacity of the layer to make it lighter. Well, you can do this if your sketch isn't on the default background layer. Unfortunatly, mine is, so it's by default locked, and I can't do shiet about it. So, this is how you get around it!

First, go to Layer>Duplicate Layer, and make sure the layer you want to duplicate is selected, then click OK, as illustrated below =^-^=:

Alrighty, now you got two layers; the origional BG layer, and the duplicate. Now select the origional BG layer, and delete it, as illustrated below:

OK, now next, make two new layers. One of them is gonna be where you're gonna do your lineart, so just leave it where it is, ABOVE the duplicate BG layer. The other you're gonna put it under the duplicate BG layer, and take the paint bucket and fill the new layer with white:

And yes, I have a screenshot to illustrate every part of that pervious step XD. So yeah, now you can adjust the opactiy of the sketch layer!!! YAY! Now, why is there a layer filled with white? Well, that's so when you adjust the opacity of the sketch layer, it looks like this:

And not like this:

Wow, this tutorial is just filled with nifty screenshots, neh? XD

So NOW we're ready to lineart! WOOT! Alrighty, now make sure you're on the layer we created earlier that's above the layer that contains your sektch, zoom in super close (or however close you'd like), and pick what size bursh you want to use.

Now to get the pen pressure to work right and all that good stuff in PS, there's a little tab on the upper right side of the screen called "Brushes," and it has a bunch of settings for your tablet and brush settings. I don't know if this is the same for other versions of PS, some I've heard are already pre-set with these, but I'm not completely sure, but here's what mine look's like:

And these are just the things I always have checked, you don't have to have the same ones X3

OK, now that you have all that set up, start inking!

Now, there's a nifty little trick to linearting I've found out recently. See, before I'd just try to make one continuous line and it'd look aweful. If you can do that and make a clean line, you are God and I will lick your feet. But, my hands are shakey so I can't. So, it you kinda sketch the line in with a bunch of continous little lines rather then one large line at one, it works out way better, it's cleaner, easier to work with, and it's easier to fix your mistakes. I can't think of any other way to explain it, so I made a nifty little animation of it!:

YAY! HOPEFULLY you guys get that. I suck at explaining things like that XD Now that I got the main outline-ish-thing done, you can either erase the sketch, or just delete that layer altogether:

Now, we aint done yet. Now we get to make it all pretty with this wonderful thing called "Line Variation"!!! *insert sparkles and such here* That would be the variation of line, between thick and thin, light and dark, and all that good stuffs. Now to do this, you should determine where your lightsource will be, and make the lines thicker on the side where the shadows will be:

Before line variation:

After line variation:

Now wasn't that fun or what?!?! You can also take an eraser to make lines thiner, like at the edge of things, like his hair tips. But naturally, when you draw, you already have that thick to thin, but it never hurts to mess with it a little X3

No make your pretty little signature somewhere:

Annnnnddddddddd you're DONE!!! 8DDDDDDDDDD:

This concludes my little tutorial! Hope I helped someone somewhere learn something, and hopefully I explained it all to where you guys understood me XD

Maybe I'll make another tutorial sometime soon, who knows X3 THANKS GUYS!!! -Jesse aka: MQ

nice tutorial o.o though you somehow managed to leave off his right eye...which is a bit disconcerting... o_o;;

informative though :3 especially w/ all the screenshots.

Yeah...bout the right eye thing. Was having a hard time drawing it, so I left it out and planned on just leaving that part of his face in shadows so you wouldn't see it either way.

Hope this is helping everyone <4
