Art-Related Careers
We are all avid artists. It is our passion. How many of you are going into an art-related career or would like to use your skills in the world of competitive careers?

I'd like to be an advertising artist, or maybe an illustrator (combine my love of books with love of art)

How about you?

And to see me made her awful sad

although I do love drawing and art as a whole, you'll never find me pursuing a career in the field. I'm finishing up my second year now of university - where I have been studying geology. Probably the only reason I'm not going into the art field is that I like to draw what I like to draw, not what people want me to draw [unless their wants overlap with my likes]... Its been widely debated with me by my professors as to what exactly I should go into. I've helped one with his paper by drawing a diagram, and he seems to think that I should go into geologic illustration now ^^;

I'm currently enrolled in DigiPen Institute of Technology in Redmond Washington. I'm taking the Bachelors Degree in Production Animation. It is a GRUELING course but I've learned a lot.

I originally entered the program with the intent of going into the gaming industry when I graduate. Now, I think I would like to start out with Flash Animation since 3D is rather frustrating for me. I still have a few years to go though so I'm sure I will change my mind several times from this point on.

I'd love to even go to some kind of art school but since I didn't finish or even enter highschool... I can't really get into one as far as I know.

Plus, and believe me, this has nothing to do with not being confident enough in myself really, but I feel I don't have enough imagination or the right vision to do something in an art career. sadly.

and idk what career I'd want to choose if I could

Demon, I know your plight, I had to drop out of high school because of serious lack of transfer of credits when I moved, and I really didn't want to repeat three whole years of my life of things I'd already learned. I dropped out and got my GED and that's enough to get into college as long as I apply myself quite hard, and pay for my own classes, but as of right now it's been put off cause of the baby, hopefully in a couple of years I can officially say I'm going to college for Art and Web Design, but till then I'm just an avid hobbyist :P

Wow. Glass Blower. First really cool suggestion I've seen up here. xD

Isn't anybody interested in 3D stuff like sculpture or welding or architecture...?

Well anywho, I'm in college for a BFA in Animation, but I'm really not sure if it's what I want to do. I may end up having to drop out with only 2 semesters left because of money/paperwork issues, which would really suck. Everyone knows that if that happens, of course you swear to yourself that you'll go back and finish but it never happens. =_= I actually think I enjoy studying Japanese more than art, and I might like a job as a translator or an English teacher in Japan after I finish studying the language.

Sammy's right, you can make money. Many artists who also do graphic design/advertising art and design also have the chance to not only get paid by companies, but also exhibit some work they do to galleries of freelance work or work they do for the corporations. I've seen artists at a local gallery that don
t just freelance.

I have so many talented friends who have a degree in some form of art, and are living in a box. Some are good some are ok.

I don't know how vital a degree in art is...some companies prefer a great portfolio with no degree over a mediocre one with a college degree.
Example is my boyfriend (keitaro333.deviantart.com) who has no degree, and atleast I THINK he's a really talented artist and does billboard art, menu layouts, book covers, etc.

I think a degree helps, but I think art can be hit or miss as a career...and if you know people or are lucky that is a big help! =3

Atleast with art you can always have it as a side hobby or work, but I sure as heck would never go into it. Good luck to those passionate enough to try. I know Art Therapy is pretty hot these days.

Yea, I'm sorry I'm so negative about majoring in art in college...I just know so many who haven't done well at all!

I went from wanting to be a USAF pilot to wanting to major in art. (With a million things in between.) But after I found out i was too short to be a jet pilot, I struggled with various things.. and then I just said screw it- why not go to college for something I love? Most people say that many people go to college for one thing and end up doing another thing entirely. (My dad, for example, went to college for Marine Biology- and now he's a Software Engineer.)

So I'll just take things as they go, and have a good time while I try. :3

im gonna get through highschool(senior next year)

keep studying art through and after highschool(art classes, books etc)

hopefully be a rockstar for a couple years, while drawing in the middle of it all

atm, my main concern is keeping up with making music, and getting through HS. after HS and if my musical «career» doesnt pan out, then ill asses my artistic skills and either study more,(art classes, colleges) or try my luck in the art world

right now its just an enjoyable hobby.

I'm not sure at the moment. I don't think I'm quite good enough to go into working for a company right now, like what Braden's advertising. I still have quite a long ways to go. But I think most of these ideas up here are great ideas. Character design, game design, animation, etc. A little of everything.

I would've loved to take that offer from Braden, but...alas, as I said, I'm not near good enough for it. For now, I'm just freelance artist, for anything. :/ I need the monies. lol

Granted, I'm only in 9th grade, so I've still got a ways to go and may change my mind. But I intend on going into something art-related. ^^

ive just finished a degree in graphic design wheee!
and even tho i dont wanna do graphic design as a career (i find it boring uhh)
companies tend to ask for 'degree in the art field' not a specific.

btw if you want to do a career in art to get good money DO A DEGREE
if you do a degree you can get paid at LEAST 20k more a year.

for example a job i was looking at
jr: 18k a year
graduate: 40k a year

alot of difference

also alot of companies will ask for a degree in the 'must haves' and wont even look at your folio if you dont have one.

My whole glassblowing thing isn't going so well ;_;

Turns out it's pretty much a family/friend-exclusive or work-from-home kinda deal (super expensive).
Also, around my area the sessions you go to learn the stuff is like 0 per one-week class just to learn how to cut glass D:

So I've sort of set my mind on pastry school to become a cake decorator <3

But believe me, if I can make that kinda money, I'll definitely be pursuing the glassblowing thing x3

Looooool.

I'm being a neurosurgeon if I can make it.

I'm also interested in maybe studying genetics and working on curing diseases.

Plastic surgeon is my fallback.

Re: Art-Related Careers
I was thinking of either architecture, advertising, or animation. Designing buildings sounds really awesome, I mean, after the building is all built you can be like «I designed that» same goes for ads, I just want my art to be very publicized I guess. I'm only in 10th grade art 2 though, so I've got awhile to go.

Re: Art-Related Careers
Im stuck between two pretty different ideas, science and art. Goign on to become a doctor is one idea to me, because i like my science subjects and working with people directly, but at the same time i love art, of many different forms, photography, editing, 3d and animation would be nice to get into as well, maybe illustration, ive no idea what to choose and i have to apply to uni next year, so im confused..

Medicine probably means a good steady job, but from work exp and talkign to doctors and students i know there wouldnt be time for art with the studies involved there..

art means no certainties and a lot of fingers crossed and stuff, but i do love it too..

why are there such binding decisions needing made in life..?

any ideas/thoughts on it all?

--= the only way to express imagination truly, is through art =--
